Google Does It Again… Well AT&T Did?

As we reported last week about TWC/Comcast improving speeds fro clients to directly compete with Google Fiber in KC Markets, AT&T has stepped up their networks to gigabit speeds in a Google Fiberhood in Austin, TX . In April of 2013 AT&T U-verse offered GigaPower Service and at the time it could only deliver 300mbps. Both Google Fiber and GigaPower from AT&T charge $70 per month for the service which is a step in the right direction for ISP’s seeing as the USA falls behind all other developed nations in speed and speed/price ratios.  AT&T’s price tag does have a few stipulations however such as a 1 year contract (rate good for 3 years) and data tracking on devices using its network (opt out available after first year of service).

But don’t think the good news of affordable internet is just for the Austin, TX area, AT&T in an effort to better compete with Google Fiber will be deploying in Overland Park, KS as part of its expansion so keep your eyes peeled for awesome prices and maybe use it to bring your bill down a little.

Hopefully we will see more competitive prices as faster speeds become available and Google Fiber continues to light a proverbial fire under the butts of the competition.

Unlocking Your Phone May Be Legal Once Again

Senate Bill 517, aka Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, has passed Congress and is now on its way to the POTUS desk to be signed or vetoed.  It will once again allow consumers the right to “unlock/jailbreak” their smartphones/phones without violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). This means you can legally take your phone from ATT to T-Mobile and vice versa or use your phone internationally with an overseas SIM card rather that international roaming through your provider. if Bill 517 passes it will also will force the librarian of Congress to decide on wireless portable devices are eligible for unlocking.

All-in-all it has taken 19 months for Bill 517 to get where it is today and it got there because of readers like you who got online and signed the petition at the We The People website, which now has 114,000 signatures to date.

Google Fiber Is Coming to Overland Park

Gigabit Speeds for Overland Park Are Now A Reality

In case you hadn’t heard, Monday of last week, talks between Google and the City of Overland Park went from sour grapes to sweet nectar for OP residents as an agreement was made to bring the high speed Google Fiber to the area. It is only in the planning phase but this could be huge.

So what does this mean for the residents of Overland Park? How about blazing fast speeds for around the same price as the underpowered packages being offered by Comcast, TWC, and AT&T. For $70 a month subscribers can opt for gigabit high speed internet or can get up to 5mb free for up to 7 years with a deposit of $30-$300 (depending on area).

With speeds that fast you can now purchase and download an entire album in less than 10 seconds and a full length HD film in less than 3 minutes. Now to be upfront and honest Google can only provide gigabit speed over it’s own network so expect a drop in speeds but speeds will still be well over what you may be used to already. Watch out for Sign Up Dates!

Now would be a great time to have your computer cleaned and repaired in preparation for blazing fast speeds.

Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality
You’ve heard it in the news in recent days and months but what is Net Neutrality?  “Net neutrality (also network neutrality or Internet neutrality) is the principle that ISP’s and governments should treat all data on the internet equally, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, and modes of communication. ” – Net Neutrality

Love watching HD content on Netflix, watching cat videos on YouTube, or gaming online? Without net neutrality in place your ISP, for example Comcast or AT&T, will now be able to throttle down the speeds of their network for services that use greater resources on their network. With that being said it will also allow ISP’s the ability to create tiered packages that allow better data throughput for protocols within that tier package.

Check out what the ACLU thinks about Net Neutrality.

It’s a very hazy area this thing Net Neutrality and ultimately we don’t know where it will go, but what we do know is that life will continue to move on.
