Cryptolocker, the new encrypter virus on the block

Cryptolocker: The New Encryption Ransomware on the Block

Well it didn’t take long for yet another iteration of the Cryptolocker virus to raise its ugly head. Known as the CryptoWall it does exactly the same as its viral forefathers and attacks what is most valuable to you and your family: your photos, music, emails, and much more. This particular version streams in from a fake Adobe Flash Player update and should be avoided at all cost. Now unlike a legitimate Adobe Flash update that pops up shortly after startup, their evil twin pops up randomly when you are out browsing the web. With just one click of the mouse you are staring down the business end of a $300+ Ransomware flash screen. NEVER PAY THE RANSOM, in most cases you will get your data back but what’s to stop them from reactivating the virus days, weeks, or even months from now.

So what should you do? Get it in to a reputable shop and let them attempt to recover your data. In the worst case scenario it’s a Tabula Rasa (Blank slate) moment and you start from scratch, while terrifying it may be the only thing to do, but if your fortunate they may be able to recover some, if not most, of your data. You can help yourself out a little by maintaining regular backups as well but be warned Crypto-style malware can attack the backup drive if it is connected at the time of infection.

4 Ways to Better Secure Your Smartphone

4 Ways to Better Secure Your Smartphone

Here are just a few security recommendations to help keep things locked down a little tighter, always remember there is no such thing as Safe only Safer so lets get started:

1. Create a lock code for your device as soon as possible using either a 4-digit pin, a alpha/numeric password, or a draw pattern. This will help prevent someone from accessing your data when the phone falls into someone else’s hands.
2. Enable the Do Not Track feature in your phones browser just like your pc web browser.
3. Avoid answering calls from numbers you don’t recognize and afterward add them to your phone spam log if it is a bot call.
4.  Lock your phone down and track your phone remotely with Android Device Manager or the Find My iPhone. By doing this, in the unfortunate event of theft, you will reduce the usability of the phone and may even be able to give the police the address where it last pinged GPS satellites.

These are just a few precautions you can take to protect your phone but can be a life saver.

Based on the CNET.com article found HERE by Charlie Osborne, now that the major top companies online have patched the issues smaller organizations may not follow suit.

While Heartbleed only affects servers it never hurts to have check your machine for virus/malware.
