AMD’s CEO steps down, COO takes over

From the Cnet.com Article by Ben Fox Rubin ( @benfoxrubin)

AMD named Lisa Su, its chief operating officer, as its new CEO, effective immediately, replacing Rory Read as the struggling maker of PC chips continues its attempt at a turnaround.

Read, 52 years old, stepped down as president and chief executive, and as a board member. He will support the transition as an adviser, remaining with the company through the end of this year. Prior to joining AMD in 2011, Read was computer-maker Lenovo’s chief operating officer, and before then spent 23 years at IBM.

The company said it’s currently negotiating a transition and separation agreement with Read.

Su, 44 years old, joined AMD in 2012, and most recently has been responsible for integrating AMD’s business units, sales, global operations and infrastructure enablement teams. Before coming to the chipmaker, she worked at chipmaker Freescale and at IBM.

“Leadership succession planning has been a joint effort between Rory and the board and we felt that Lisa’s expertise and proven leadership in the global semiconductor industry make this an ideal time for her to lead the company,” Bruce Claflin, AMD’s chairman, said in a statement.

The company has attempted to turn its business around as it tries to become a tougher rival to Intel, though it has struggled along the way. For its second quarter, AMD reported stronger revenue, of $1.44 billion, and narrowed its loss to $36 million from $74 million a year earlier.

AMD is scheduled to report third-quarter results next Thursday.

CTP Locker

CTP-LOCKER: The Hits Keep Coming

Yet another Ransomware virus is out called CTP-Locker. Sold on the Deep Web as a turnkey business available for purchase for a paltry $3000 USD. CTP works like other Ransomware it encrypts all of your data on both internal and external hard drives including mapped network drives. Unlike the crypto family of virus/malware that “deletes” the key after its 72 hour timer expires, CTP instead doubles the ransom as to punish its victims for not paying immediately. As of this article, the recommended cost to decrypt data is .5 bitcoins or $320USD.

Currently CTP is only impacting the world of Windows but Android may be next on the target list as we have seen previous Ransomware make its way to handheld devices. It would seem that this is only the beginning of Android user community’s headaches.

Unfortunately CTP-Locker is very new and there aren’t a lot of reports on how it spreads and from what analysts can tell there isn’t just one way it does attack your PC so user beware. As we have said in previous posts always have a backup of your data and NEVER PAY THE RANSOM!

Windows 9 – The Way of the Windows Future

Windows 9: User Experience Evolved?

So if your like me you didn’t necessarily dig Windows 8 or its upgrade Windows 8.1 but Microsoft is trying a gutsy move: An operating system that adjusts its visual appearance and user interface to accommodate the hardware its on. So what exactly does that mean for the average joe? Well if your using a laptop or desktop where a keyboard and mouse are present Windows 9 will bypass the metro style interface and take you straight to the tried and true Windows Desktop screen, if you have a Windows Tablet it will use a touch screen styled interface like Metro and if you have a Tabtop (Tablet/Laptop Hybrid) then it will allow you to switch be the Metro interface and traditional desktop style when a keyboard is detected.  Windows 9 is reported to be coming out in the Spring next year and the public preview will be available in the fall so we may see, sooner rather than later, if this will be the shot in the arm Microsoft and Windows or yet another poison.

The Mouse Trap Got Better, the Mouse Got Smarter

Cryptolocker Keeps on Trucking Despite the Network Shutdown

If you use email to fax  or receive them be on the look out. As recently as 6/5/2014, even though the botnet Zeus has been destroyed, Cryptolocker has found a new way to infect your pc and any shared/drop boxed files you have on your pc.  You are presented with an email delivery notification stating a new fax has been sent your way. In the email there is a link to Dropbox where the faux email is being stored. As soon as the link is clicked, the goose is cooked. Within a matter of minutes the encryption will take place but whatever you do, DO NOT PAY THE RANSOM to recover your data as you may end up paying for a ransom and may remain a hostage. For our friends down under be mindful of odd emails from your electric company because two weeks ago a similar version of the Cryptolocker virus made the rounds under the guise of an “Australian Electric Company Bill”

If you have been infected please call our office and schedule an appointment to get your computer cleaned and allow us to attempt to recover your data.
